Method to bake a cake without an oven:
It is true that you can make perfect and no one cake at your home without using the oven. You can use alternatives like a stovetop, pressure cooker, or even a large pan having a lid on it. I also always do not use the oven for cake baking at home and find a perfectly delicious cake. If you have no tried a pressure cooker for cake baking, then just try it and have fun.
Ingredients for cake baking:
Here are the basic ingredients that are required for cake baking. You must have these ingredients at your home before you start cake baking.
- Two cups of all-purpose flour
- One and a half cups granulated sugar
- Three-by-fourth cups of unsalted and soft butter
- Three eggs
- One cup of milk
- One tablespoon of baking powder
- One teaspoon of vanilla flavor
Choosing flour for cake baking:
To bake a cake such type of all-purpose flour should be preferred that is low in protein content. It is due to the reason that flour high in protein gives a denser and chewier texture to the cake which is not suitable.
You should select that all-purpose flour in the market that has the label “cake flour”. This flour contains lower proteins of about 8-9% of protein than regular all-purpose flour (having 10-12%). Cake flour is specially prepared to make cakes, biscuits, and other soft goods.
But if you did not find cake flour or soft wheat flour you can prepare it at your home. For this just combine all-purpose flour with cornstarch. To prepare one cup of substitute for cake flour measure one cup of all-purpose flour and then take off two tablespoons from it. Then add two tablespoons of cornstarch in it. Mix them well to give them a homogenous texture.
Butter for best cake baking:
You have to select the right type of butter to get the best flavor and texture of the cake. Best quality cake can only be attained by choosing the best butter. If the butter is not available then in cake-baking oil can be used.
Unsalted butter for cake baking:
In most cake recipes unsalted butter is added. It allows you to add salt to the cake according to taste. If you use salted butter, then you have to monitor the salt in the cake dough. during cake baking, salt can be adjusted according to your desire.
High-quality butter:
The quality of butter you use is directly related to the quality of the cake you bake. Such butter should be selected as having more than 82% fat content. Then your prepared cake will have creamy, and rich flavor and texture. If you want exact texture during cake baking then select the high-quality butter.
Room temperature butter:
When you are making a cake, make sure to use room-temperature butter. Butter at this temperature will more easily mix with sugar to give a fluffier and light cake. If you have kept butter in the fridge then allow it to sit at room temperature for some time and then use it.
Use of cultured butter to bake a cake:
If you want to add some tangy flavor to your cake then use cultured butter. It is made with fermented cream to use in rich flavored cakes like chocolate cakes.
Using clarified butter:
Clarified butter also known as ghee can also be used as a substitute for butter in chiffon cakes or sponge cakes. Ghee has a higher smoke point than butter and can be stable at high temperatures without burning.
How many eggs for the cake recipe?
How many eggs are required to bake a cake depends on the size and type of cake you are going to bake. Commonly for a basic sponge cake of the size 8 to 9 inches you need to add 3 eggs. Eggs are added to enhance the richness of the cake. They also help to make the cake more fluffy.
However, the quantity of eggs to make the cakes may vary according to the topping ingredients. If you do not add eggs to the cake that cake will not look delicious and rich in flavor.
The milk used for cake baking:
The type of milk used for cake baking also affects the final texture and flavor of the cake. Following are the common types of milk that are used to bake a cake.
Whole milk:
Whole milk is the best choice to bake a cake because it contains fat and protein in a balanced amount. It will give a moist and tender texture to the cake which is liked by most people.
Buttermilk:
Buttermilk has a slightly tangy flavor and it gives acidic nature to the cake. Buttermilk activates the baking soda and adds fluffy nature to the cake. You can use buttermilk if do not want to use regular milk. In that case, the baking powder amount should be adjusted in the cake.
Skim milk in cake baking:
If you like the slightly dry texture of the cake then add skimmed milk. It has low fat content so you have to adjust the amount of butter added to the cake. Most people who want to maintain their weight prefer to add skim milk.
Non-dairy milk:
Such people who are lactose intolerant prefer to use nondairy milk substitutes. These may include soy milk, almond milk, or coconut milk. If you use non-dairy milk substitutes then it will give different consistency and flavor as compared to full-fat milk.
Why add baking powder in cake baking:
Without baking powder, you cannot make a perfect cake. It is necessary to rise the cake and give it a spongy texture. Baking powder acts as a leavening agent. It releases carbon dioxide when reacts with liquid on heating. The released carbon dioxide creates small pockets of air in the cake. During the baking process, these air pockets expand and the dough of the cake rise.
Baking powder also neutralizes the acidic nature of the cake. The amount of baking powder used in the cake depends on the variation of the cake. Every type of cake recipe requires a different quantity of baking powder.
